DESCRIPTION
Mirapex is a dopamine agonist that mimics dopamine, a natural chemical in the brain that controls movement. It is used to manage symptoms of Parkinson's disease such as stiffness, tremors, muscle spasms, slow movements, and balance problems. It is also prescribed for moderate to severe restless legs syndrome to relieve uncomfortable sensations and the urge to move the legs.
Pramipexole acts on dopamine receptors (mainly D2 and D3) in the brain, stimulating them to compensate for the dopamine deficiency that occurs in Parkinson’s disease. This helps improve motor control and reduce symptoms. For restless legs syndrome, the exact mechanism is less clear but is related to dopamine receptor stimulation reducing sensory discomfort.
Mirapex is a non-ergot dopamine receptor agonist with high affinity for D3 receptors and moderate affinity for D2 receptors. It selectively activates these receptors in the basal ganglia, enhancing dopaminergic neurotransmission. It is rapidly absorbed and primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys.
