DESCRIPTION
Magnesium sulfate is an essential mineral for various biochemical processes in the body, including enzyme activation, muscle function, and nervous system regulation. The injectable form of magnesium sulfate is typically used in emergency or inpatient settings where rapid action is necessary.
Magnesium sulfate increases magnesium levels in the body, which plays a critical role in muscle contraction, nerve transmission, and electrolyte balance. In eclampsia, it acts as a CNS depressant, helping to prevent seizures by stabilizing neuronal membranes.
Absorption and distribution: Magnesium sulfate is rapidly absorbed after intravenous or intramuscular administration. Distributed widely throughout the body, especially in the bones, muscles, and extracellular fluid. Excreted primarily through the kidneys.
Onset & Duration: When administered intravenously, onset occurs immediately with full effect within 15-30 minutes. Duration varies, but effects can last 3-4 hours depending on the dose.
Benefits:
- Effective for managing severe conditions like eclampsia, cardiac arrhythmias, and acute asthma attacks.
- Rapid onset of action, especially when administered intravenously.
- Helps regulate electrolyte balance, improving overall health.
- Non-toxic at therapeutic doses when used properly.
PACKAGING & DOSAGE
Magnesium sulfate is sold in 2 dosages: 5 ml or 10 ml.
Both type of package contain 10 vials
Active ingredient: Magnesium sulfate (250 mg/mL).
Excipients: Water for injection (sterile), sulfuric acid (may be used to adjust pH).
Eclampsia or pre-eclampsia: Initial IV dose: 4–6 g (in 100 mL of normal saline or dextrose) over 15–20 minutes. Maintenance IV dose: 1–2 g/hour as needed for seizure control. IM dose: May also be given intramuscularly as a backup, often 5 g in each buttock every 4 hours.
Cardiac arrhythmias (torsades de pointes): IV dose: 1–2 g IV over 1-2 minutes, repeated if needed.
Asthma attack (severe): IV dose: 2 g in 100 mL of saline, administered over 20 minutes.
Magnesium deficiency: Dosing depends on the clinical situation but typically involves IV administration based on serum levels.
SIDE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS
- Hypotension (due to vasodilation).
- Bradycardia or cardiac arrest (at high doses).
- Respiratory depression.
- Flushing, sweating, or nausea.
- Use cautiously in patients with kidney dysfunction, as magnesium can accumulate in the body, leading to toxicity.
- Monitor serum magnesium levels: Regular monitoring is essential, especially in high-dose or prolonged use.
- Cardiac monitoring: In patients receiving IV magnesium.
STORAGE
Store in dry place at room temperature. Do not exceed storage temperature higher than 25 degrees Celcius. Keep away from direct sunlight. Keep locked and away from children.
