Description

ITRACONAZOLE (Sporanox, Sporaz, Orungal) is an antifungal product that is used in adults to treat infections caused by fungus. This includes infections in any part of the body including the lungs, mouth or throat, toenails, or fingernails. Itraconazole was patented in 1978 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1992. It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

USES

  • Lesions of the skin and mucous membranes: vulvovaginal candidiasis; dermatomycosis; pityriasis versicolor; oral mucosa candidiasis; fungal keratitis.
  • Onychomycosis caused by dermatophytes and/or yeast-like fungi.
  • Systemic mycoses: systemic aspergillosis and candidiasis; cryptococcosis (including cryptococcal meningitis): in immunocompromised patients and in all patients with cryptococcosis of the central nervous system, itraconazole should only be used if first-line drugs are not applicable in this case or are not effective; histoplasmosis; sporotrichosis; paracoccidioidomycosis; blastomycosis; other rare systemic or tropical mycoses.

DESCRIPTION
Itraconazole has a broader spectrum of activity than fluconazole (but not as broad as voriconazole or posaconazole). In particular, it is active against Aspergillus, which fluconazole is not. It is also licensed for use in blastomycosis, sporotrichosis, histoplasmosis, and onychomycosis. Itraconazole is over 99% protein-bound and has virtually no penetration into cerebrospinal fluid. Therefore, it should not be used to treat meningitis or other central nervous system infections.[9] According to the Johns Hopkins Abx Guide, it has "negligible CSF penetration, however treatment has been successful for cryptococcal and coccidioidal meningitis".

It is also prescribed for systemic infections, such as aspergillosis, candidiasis, and cryptococcosis, where other antifungal drugs are inappropriate or ineffective.
