Description

EMLA CREAM is a topical anesthetic formulation that combines lidocaine (2.5%) and prilocaine (2.5%) to provide local anesthesia for minor skin procedures. It is widely used to numb the skin before needle insertion or other minor dermatological procedures. The cream is typically applied to the skin 30–60 minutes before the procedure for effective anesthesia.

USES

  • Local anesthesia: For the numbing of the skin before procedures such as needle insertions, venipuncture, tattooing, piercing, and other dermatological procedures.
  • Pain relief for minor skin irritation: For conditions like sunburn, minor cuts, or insect bites, to provide temporary relief.
  • Topical analgesia before other medical treatments, including laser treatments or minor surgical procedures.

DESCRIPTION
Emla Cream contains two local anesthetics: Lidocaine and prilocaine, both of which work by blocking the nerve signals in the skin, effectively numbing the area for a period of time. The cream is applied to the skin surface and, once absorbed, it creates an anesthetic effect in the underlying tissues.

Emla is typically used in non-invasive procedures, where skin numbing is required for patient comfort, such as blood draws, injections, or minor dermatological surgeries. It is also effective in relieving discomfort caused by superficial skin lesions and during the application of needle-based treatments.

Mechanism of action: Lidocaine and prilocaine are both amide-type local anesthetics. They work by blocking sodium channels in nerve membranes, which prevents the conduction of nerve impulses, effectively numbing the skin and underlying tissues. Lidocaine acts rapidly, and prilocaine prolongs the anesthetic effect, enhancing lidocaine’s action.
When applied topically, the cream is absorbed through the skin. The extent of absorption depends on factors like the amount applied, area covered, and duration of application. After absorption, the active ingredients are distributed through the skin and into the bloodstream, although only a small amount of the drug is typically absorbed. Lidocaine and prilocaine are metabolized in the liver, and their metabolites are excreted via the kidneys. In general, very little of the medication reaches the bloodstream when used topically, so systemic effects are rare.
