DESCRIPTION
Metronidazole is a synthetic nitroimidazole derivative with potent activity against most anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. It is rapidly absorbed and evenly distributed throughout the body, including the central nervous system and tissues. It crosses the placenta, is found in breast milk, and is metabolized mainly in the liver with urinary excretion.
Metronidazole enters cells by diffusion. In anaerobic organisms, it is reduced by intracellular proteins, generating cytotoxic free radicals that damage DNA and cause cell death. It is active against bacteroides, clostridium, fusobacterium, gardnerella vaginalis, helicobacter pylori, and most protozoa.
Benefits:
- Broad spectrum: Targets both bacteria and parasites that other antibiotics may not cover.
- Rapid action: Effective and fast bactericidal and protozoal activity.
- Widely used: Proven record in treating severe and mixed infections, especially where anaerobes are involved.
