DESCRIPTION
Tranexamic acid (Cyklokapron) works by inhibiting fibrinolysis, the process that breaks down blood clots. It is a synthetic derivative of lysine that competitively and reversibly binds to lysine receptor sites on plasminogen, preventing plasminogen from being converted to plasmin, an enzyme that degrades fibrin clots.

By blocking the binding of plasminogen to fibrin, tranexamic acid stabilizes the fibrin matrix and preserves blood clots, thus preventing or reducing excessive bleeding. It also weakly inhibits plasmin activity and can block urokinase plasminogen activator, further contributing to its antifibrinolytic effect.

Tranexamic acid was first synthesized in 1962 and is now listed as an essential medicine by the World Health Organization due to its critical role in management of acute and chronic bleeding disorders.

Benefits:

  • Reduces deaths from trauma-induced bleeding when administered within 3 hours.
  • Decreases need for transfusions and additional treatments for hemorrhage.
  • Treats heavy periods, and used after childbirth to control postpartum bleeding.
  • Improves quality of life for patients with chronic bleeding issues.
