DESCRIPTION
Lamotrigine acts by stabilizing neuronal membranes, primarily by selectively inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channels, which reduces excessive neuronal firing and decreases the release of excitatory neurotransmitters like glutamate and aspartate. This mechanism helps to prevent seizures and stabilize mood.
Lamictal has a long half-life (~29 hours) and is metabolized in the liver predominantly via glucuronidation. It has minimal effects on other neurotransmitters such as serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine.
