DESCRIPTION
Amisulpride helps to control psychosis, such as schizophrenia. Psychosis means that a person may hear or see things others do not, strongly believe things that are not true, or have confused thoughts.

The brain uses chemical messengers, including dopamine, to send signals. In psychosis, dopamine activity may be too high in some parts of the brain. Amisulpride blocks some dopamine signals rather like turning down the volume on an overly loud speaker. This can help reduce hearing voices or seeing things that are not there, unusual or frightening beliefs, suspiciousness and confused thinking.

Amisulpride does not usually work instantly. Symptoms may improve gradually over days or weeks. It is often taken regularly for a longer period to reduce the chance that symptoms return.

  • At higher doses, it blocks dopamine D2 and D3 receptors. This can reduce excessive dopamine activity linked to hallucinations and delusions.
  • At lower doses, it preferentially blocks presynaptic dopamine receptors. This may increase dopamine signaling in areas involved in motivation and emotional expression.
  • It acts mainly on dopamine receptors and has little or no direct activity at several serotonin, histamine, adrenergic or cholinergic receptors.
