CLINDAMYCIN is a semi-synthetic lincosamide antibiotic used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible anaerobic, streptococcal, staphylococcal, and pneumococcal bacteria.

DESCRIPTION

Clindamycin is derived from lincomycin, a naturally occurring antibiotic. It has a relatively narrow spectrum, primarily targeting gram-positive cocci and bacilli, as well as anaerobic bacteria. It acts as a bacteriostatic agent by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. Clindamycin is particularly valuable in treating infections where penicillin is contraindicated, such as in penicillin-allergic patients. It is also used topically for acne vulgaris and has some activity against protozoa.
