DESCRIPTION
Cabergoline is an ergot derivative that acts as a potent dopamine D2 receptor agonist. It works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, which in turn inhibits the secretion of prolactin from the pituitary gland. This decreases prolactin levels, helping to restore normal menstrual function, reduce milk production, and treat conditions caused by elevated prolactin such as infertility and prolactinomas (pituitary tumors).
Cabergoline leads to normalization of prolactin levels and resolution of symptoms related to hyperprolactinemia. Due to its long half-life, cabergoline allows for less frequent dosing than older dopamine agonists like bromocriptine.
