DESCRIPTIONUltracaine D-S is a local anesthetic used in dental procedures to provide pain relief. It is a combination of articaine hydrochloride (4%) and epinephrine (1:100,000), designed to offer effective anesthesia and minimize bleeding during dental treatments such as tooth extractions, fillings, and oral surgeries. Articaine is an amide-type local anesthetic with a rapid onset and intermediate duration of action. It works by blocking nerve conduction, preventing the transmission of pain signals from the treated area to the brain. Epinephrine (also known as adrenaline) is included in the formulation to cause vasoconstriction in the area of administration, reducing blood flow. PACKAGING & DOSAGE
One pack contains 10 vials. It is available in 2 different types:
Ultracaine D-S, 40 mg+0.005 mg/ml 2 ml/vial.
Ultracaine D-C forte, 40 mg+0.01 mg/ml 2 ml/vial.
Active ingredient: Articaine hydrochloride 40 mg, epinephrine 0.005 mg or 0.01 mg. This depends of the format (Ultracaine D-S or Ultracaine D-C forte).
Excipients: Sodium chloride, sodium hydroxide or hydrochloric acid, water for injection.
For dental procedures, the recommended dose is usually 1 to 3 cartridges of Ultracaine D-S (depending on the procedure's complexity and duration). Each cartridge contains 4% articaine, which means each cartridge provides 72 mg of articaine. The maximum recommended dose is typically 7 mg of articaine per kg body weight. For example, for a person weighing 70 kg (154 lbs), the maximum recommended dose would be 490 mg of articaine (around 7 cartridges of Ultracaine D-S).
SIDE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS
- Headache.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Temporary tingling or prickling sensations near the injection site (paresthesia).
- The safety of Ultracaine during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established.
