DESCRIPTION
Terazosin (Hytrin) is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor blocker used primarily to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and hypertension. It works by selectively blocking alpha-1 receptors on smooth muscle cells in the prostate, bladder neck, and blood vessels. This action relaxes the muscles, leading to improved urine flow in BPH and dilation of blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure in hypertension.
Terazosin (Hytrin) is a competitive antagonist of alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, predominantly alpha-1A, alpha-1B, and alpha-1D subtypes. By blocking these receptors in vascular smooth muscle, terazosin causes vasodilation, decreasing total peripheral resistance and blood pressure. In the urinary tract, relaxation of smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder neck reduces urethral resistance, improving urinary flow and relieving obstruction symptoms associated with BPH. Additionally, terazosin has been shown to induce apoptosis in prostate cells over time, potentially contributing to long-term prostate health benefits.
