DESCRIPTION
Sandimmun Neoral® (cyclosporine) is an immunosuppressant that calms overactive immune responses to prevent organ rejection after transplants or to treat severe autoimmune conditions where the body mistakenly attacks its own tissues.
Cyclosporine revolutionized transplant by allowing patients' bodies to accept donated kidneys, livers, hearts, or bone marrow without immediate rejection. Unlike older steroids, it specifically targets T-cells—key immune soldiers—by blocking an enzyme called calcineurin, which stops these cells from multiplying and releasing inflammation-causing chemicals like interleukin-2. This selective action reduces immune overreactions without completely shutting down the body's defenses against infections, though it still lowers overall immunity.
Benefits:
- Keeps transplants working longer.
- Clears up severe skin rashes or eases joint pain fast.
- Lets some people cut back on stronger steroid pills.
