DESCRIPTION
Roxadustat, sold under the brand name Evrenzo, is an anti-anemia medication. Roxadustat is a HIF prolyl-hydroxylase inhibitor that increases endogenous production of erythropoietin and stimulates production of hemoglobin and red blood cells. It was investigated in clinical trials for the treatment of anemia caused by chronic kidney disease (CKD)
Roxadustat is an oral medication used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The dosing regimen varies based on individual patient factors, including body weight, prior treatment with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), and whether the patient is on dialysis.Read further: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxadustat
While Roxadustat is not specifically intended for athletic performance enhancement, its ability to increase red blood cell production and improve oxygen transport in the body has raised concerns about its potential for misuse in sports. Roxadustat stimulates erythropoiesis, leading to increased hemoglobin levels and enhanced oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. This effect is similar to the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs), which are sometimes misused by athletes in endurance sports (e.g., cycling, long-distance running) to improve stamina and performance by enhancing oxygen delivery to muscles. This can improve endurance and potentially provide an unfair advantage, particularly in endurance sports where oxygen delivery is crucial. Roxadustat is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Administration Frequency: Roxadustat is taken orally three times per week, ensuring doses are not on consecutive days.
Target Hemoglobin (Hb) Levels: The dose should be individualized to achieve and maintain Hb levels between 10 to 12 g/dL.
Evrenzo (Roxadustat) can be taken with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed, broken, or crushed. They should be taken at least one hour after administration of phosphate binders or other medications containing multivalent cations (e.g., calcium, iron, magnesium, or aluminum).
SIDE EFFECTS
These are generally mild and may improve as your body adjusts to the medication:
Roxadustat can lead to an increase in blood pressure. Monitoring blood pressure regularly is important during treatment. Some people experience headaches as a common side effect. Feeling tired or fatigued is another reported side effect, which may be related to changes in red blood cell count. Nausea or stomach discomfort can occur, especially when the medication is started or when doses are adjusted.
STORAGE Store in dry place at room temperature. Do not exceed storage temperature higher than 25 degrees Celcius. Keep away from direct sunlight. Keep locked and away from children.
