DESCRIPTION
Midecamycin is a naturally occurring 16-membered acetoxy-substituted macrolide antibiotic, originally synthesized from Streptomyces mycarofaciens. It acts similarly to erythromycin but is sometimes preferred for its improved tolerability and activity against certain resistant strains. Macropen is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, achieving high concentrations in tissues such as the lungs, glands, and skin. It is metabolized in the liver and excreted mainly in bile, with a minor portion eliminated via urine.
Midecamycin binds irreversibly to the 50S subunit of the bacterial ribosome, inhibiting protein synthesis by preventing peptide bond formation and translocation. This results in a bacteriostatic effect at lower doses and bactericidal action at higher doses.
