DESCRIPTION
Flunarizine helps make overactive nerve cells in the brain less excitable. It partly blocks the movement of calcium into cells. Calcium is important for nerve signals, but too much activity may contribute to migraine. Flunarizine does not stop a headache immediately. Instead, when taken regularly it may help make migraines happen less often or feel less severe. With the nerve cells under better control, the wave of abnormal electrical activity that can start a migraine becomes much less likely to occur. The blood vessels and pain pathways in the brain also remain more stable.
Flunarizine works slowly. It doesn't stop a migraine that's already happening. Instead, it gradually teaches the brain to stay calmer over several weeks. As the brain becomes less sensitive, migraine attacks usually become less frequent and often less severe.
Benefits:
Fewer migraine attacks.
Sometimes less severe or shorter attacks.
Reduced need for acute migraine medication.
Possible improvement of vestibular vertigo.
The benefit is usually assessed after several weeks rather than immediately. Its most established use is migraine prevention.
