ELCAR (Levocarnitine) is a naturally occurring substance that the body needs for energy. It is used to treat carnitine deficiency. Carnitine is a small protein that binds to and helps transport fatty acids into the mitochondria, the site of energy production within cells. In the mitochondria, carnitine binds to and removes toxins from the cells. Carnitine deficiency is a condition that prevents the body from using certain fats for energy and causes a variety of symptoms including severe brain dysfunction (encephalopathy), a weakened and enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy), muscle weakness, confusion, vomiting, and low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Levocarnitine corrects low carnitine levels and reverses symptoms of carnitine deficiency. The FDA approved levocarnitine in December 1985.

DESCRIPTION
Carnitine is used for the treatment of primary systemic carnitine deficiency, a genetic impairment of normal biosynthesis or utilization of levocarnitine from dietary sources, or for the treatment of secondary carnitine deficiency resulting from an inborn error of metabolism such as glutaric aciduria II, methyl malonic aciduria, propionic acidemia, and medium chain fatty acylCoA dehydrogenase deficiency. Used therapeutically to stimulate gastric and pancreatic secretions and in the treatment of hyperlipoproteinemias. Parenteral levocarnitine is indicated for the prevention and treatment of carnitine deficiency in patients with end-stage renal disease.

PACKAGE & DOSAGE
IM or IV injectables. Ready-to-inject, no need to reconstitute.
Active ingredient: Levocarnitine (Carnifite) - 100 mg per ml, 500 mg per vial (5 ml).
Excipients: core: water for injection - up to 1 ml.

In acute disorders of cerebral circulation, 1000 mg per day (2 vials) is prescribed for 3 days, and then 500 mg per day (1 vial) for 7 days. After 10-12 days, repeated course is possible for 3-5 days.
When prescribing the drug in the subacute and recovery period, with discirculatory encephalopathy, carnitine deficiency 500-1000 mg per day (1-2 vials) intramuscularly (2-3 times a day) for 3-7 days. If necessary, a second course is prescribed after 12-14 days.

STORAGE
It is recommended to store the medicine in a dark place at a temperature not exceeding 25°C.
