DESCRIPTION
Clonidine is an alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that works centrally in the brain to reduce sympathetic outflow, leading to decreased heart rate and blood vessel relaxation, effectively lowering blood pressure.
Clonidine binds to alpha-2 receptors and imidazoline receptors in the brainstem, reducing sympathetic nervous system activity, which results in vasodilation and decreased heart rate. This lowers blood pressure and reduces workload on the heart.
