Buspirone is thought to work by decreasing the amount and actions of a chemical known as serotonin in certain parts of the brain. Buspirone was first made in 1968 and approved for medical use in the United States in 1986. Buspar is not an anti-psychotic medication and should not be used in place of medication prescribed by your doctor for mental illness.

Take this medication by mouth, usually 2 or 3 times a day or as directed by your doctor. You may take this medication with or without food, but it is important to choose one way and always take it the same way so that the amount of drug absorbed will always be the same.
