DESCRIPTION
XMALON is indicated for the adjuvant treatment of estrogen receptor-positive early breast cancer in postmenopausal women, especially after completing 2 to 3 years of tamoxifen therapy, to complete a total of five years of hormonal treatment. It is also used for treating advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed following tamoxifen treatment. It lowers estrogen levels in the body by irreversibly inhibiting the aromatase enzyme, which converts androgens into estrogens. This reduction limits the growth stimulus for estrogen-dependent breast cancer cells.
Benefits:
Effectively reduces estrogen levels to slow or stop growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
Can be used sequentially after tamoxifen for enhanced reduction of breast cancer recurrence risk.
Generally well tolerated with a tolerable side effect profile compared to some other hormonal treatments.
Standard dose: 25 mg once daily orally after a meal.
Treatment duration varies; often prescribed to complete five years of total hormonal therapy or continued as long as benefit is evident in advanced disease.
