DESCRIPTION
Vortioxetine is an antidepressant medication used primarily for the treatment of major depressive disorder. It is classified as an atypical antidepressant and a serotonin modulator and stimulator (SMS), meaning it has a unique mechanism of action compared to other antidepressants.
Vortioxetine works by increasing serotonin levels in the brain through two key actions:
Inhibition of the serotonin transporter: This increases the availability of serotonin in the synaptic gap, enhancing mood.
Modulation of serotonin receptors: Vortioxetine acts on various serotonin receptors (such as 5-HT3, 5-HT7, and 5-HT1A), which is thought to contribute to its effects on mood, cognition, and anxiety.
Vortioxetine also affects other neurotransmitters, including dopamine, norepinephrine, and histamine, though its primary effect is on serotonin. Read further: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortioxetine
