TRUXAL (Chlorprothixene) is an antipsychotic primarily used to treat symptoms of psychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia, anxiety disorders, and other psychotic conditions. It belongs to the typical antipsychotic class and works by affecting certain neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin.

DESCRIPTION
Chlorprothixene, sold under the brand name Truxal among others, is a typical antipsychotic of the thioxanthene group. Chlorprothixene blocks dopamine (D2) receptors in the brain, helping reduce psychotic symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking. It also has sedative and anxiolytic effects due to its action on other receptors. It has a low antipsychotic potency (half to 2/3 of chlorpromazine). Chlorprothixene has not thoroughly demonstrated an antidepressant or analgesic effect but it has demonstrated antiemetic effects. It is used in the treatment of nervous, mental, and emotional conditions.

PACKAGING & DOSAGE
Truxal comes in tablet form of varying strengths 25 or 50 mg.

Active substance: Ehlorprothixene hydrochloride 25 or 50 mg.

Excipients: Corn starch, lactose monohydrate, copovidone, glycerol, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, talc, magnesium stearate.

Initial dosage: 50–100 mg/day in divided doses; if necessary, gradually increase to 300 mg/day, in some cases up to 1200 mg/day may be necessary. Give the highest dose in the evening before going to bed, due to the sedative effect.

Maintenance dose: usual 100–200 mg/day, in divided doses. During long-term use of high doses, periodically evaluate whether the maintenance dose can be reduced. When discontinuing, gradually reduce the dose.

SIDE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS

Sleepiness, dizziness, dry mouth, increased saliva secretion, constipation, nausea, muscle pain, increased sweating.

Do not use if allergic to chlorprothixene, have reduced consciousness, certain blood disorders, or pheochromocytoma (rare adrenal tumor). Avoid during pregnancy or breastfeeding

STORAGE
Store in dry place at room temperature. Do not exceed storage temperature higher than 25 degrees Celcius. Keep away from direct sunlight. Keep locked and away from children.
