Tenofoshiv consists of an active substance called Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate, which belongs to the class of antiretroviral or antiviral medicine. This medicine treats HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and HBV (hepatitis B virus) infections. It is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) and works by inhibiting the enzymes (HIV reverse transcriptase; hepatitis B DNA polymerase) that are important for virus replication. It should always be taken in combination with other medicines to treat HIV infection. This tablet is suitable for adults and adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. For HIV, this medicine is given to adolescents who have already been medicated with other HIV medicines which are no longer fully effective due to resistance or have caused side effects.

 

The reverse transcriptase enzyme produces copies of DNA from the HIV’s RNA. Tenofoshiv is a nucleotide analog that inhibits the reverse transcriptase enzyme and blocks DNA synthesis. It decreases the viral load of HIV in the blood and increases the number of CD4 (T) cells, enabling the immune system to fight other infections. This reduces the risk of severity and death associated with a weak immune system.

Tenofoshiv helps to decrease the amount of HIV in your body. This helps to lower your risk of getting HIV-related complications and improves your lifespan. It may also be used to prevent HIV infection in some people at high risk. It is used in combination with other anti-HIV medicines.

 

Tenofoshiv is available as film-coated tablets in a dose of 300mg. The usual recommended dosage of this medication is one tablet every day, with or without food. For adults and children with a body weight over 3.5kg, the usual recommended dose is 300mg per day.

 

Common side effects of this medicine include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, trouble sleeping, headache, rash, sinusitis. These are usually not serious, however, inform your doctor if they bother you or do not go away. This medicine can also make you feel dizzy or drowsy, so it is advised to avoid driving. In addition to that, avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the intensity of the side effects. While on the treatment, generally, some people may experience bone pain. To cope up with this you can take calcium and vitamin D supplements as per your doctor’s advice. Birth control pills are ineffective with this medicine, therefore other reliable birth controls should be used.

Before starting with the treatment, you should consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have any kidney, liver, or bone disease. Your doctor may suggest regular blood tests to check your blood counts, liver function, and kidney function. If you are HIV positive, you should not breastfeed or share personal belongings like razors or toothbrushes. Consult your doctor to know about safe sex methods in order to prevent transmission of HIV during intercourse.
