DESCRIPTION
Pitavastatin (usually as a calcium salt) is a member of the blood cholesterol lowering class of statins. Like other statins, it is an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme that catalyses the first step of cholesterol synthesis. It was patented in 1987 and approved for medical use in 2003. It is available in Japan, South Korea and in India. In the US, it received FDA approval in 2009. The typical starting dose of pitavastatin is 1 mg to 4 mg once daily. The dose may be adjusted based on the patient's response and tolerance, with a maximum dose of 4 mg per day. It is usually taken orally once a day, with or without food.
