NYSTATIN (Mycostatin, Nystop) is an antifungus antibiotic, highly effective against yeast fungi such as Candida. The structure of the antibiotic consists of two parts one which opens up direct channels to the fungi cells and the other which destroys the cell itself. Resistance is built up very slowly.

DESCRIPTION
Nystatin is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines, a list of the most important medication needed in a basic health system. Like many other antifungals Nystatin has a bacterial origin. It was discovered in 1950 by Elizabeth Hazen and Rachel Brown, in New York, USA. Hazen found a promising micro-organism in the soil of a friend's dairy farm. She named it Streptomyces noursei, after William Nourse, the farm's owner.

PACKAGING & DOSAGE
Nystatin comes in the form of tablets. Each tablet contains 500 000 IU.
The tablets are taken orally independently of meals.
Dose for adults:
To treat Candida internal organs adults should take 1 tablet (500 000 ED) 3-4 times a day.
To treat acute cases of Candida single dose should be increased to 2 tablets (1 000 000 ED) 3-4 times a day.
Dose for children:
1 year old or younger 1/5 of a tablet (100 000 ED) 3-4 times a day.
1-13 years old 1/2 of a tablet (250 000 ED) 3-4 times a day.
13 years and older 1/2-1 tablets (250 000 - 500 000 ED) a day.
Course duration is 10-14 days. If necessary restart the course with a 7 day break inbetween.

STORAGE
