MEZATON (Phenylephrine, Neosynephrine, Sudafed PE) is a brand name for phenylephrine hydrochloride, a synthetic sympathomimetic agent primarily used as a vasoconstrictor. The 10 mg/ml, 1 ml vial formulation is commonly employed in clinical settings to manage hypotension, especially during anesthesia, and to prolong the duration of local anesthetics.
USES
- Management of hypotension.
- Prolongation of Local anesthesia.
GUARANTEE & EXPIRY DATE

DESCRIPTION
Mesaton (phenylephrine hydrochloride) is a potent vasoconstrictor beneficial in managing hypotension and enhancing local anesthesia. Its efficacy is attributed to its selective α₁-adrenergic agonist activity, leading to increased vascular resistance and blood pressure.
Phenylephrine is a selective α₁-adrenergic receptor agonist. By stimulating these receptors, it causes vasoconstriction, leading to an increase in systemic vascular resistance and, consequently, elevated blood pressure. Unlike other sympathomimetics, phenylephrine has minimal effect on β-adrenergic receptors, resulting in fewer cardiac side effects.
Pharmacokinetics: After intravenous administration, phenylephrine has a rapid onset of action, typically within minutes, and a duration of effect ranging from 15 to 20 minutes. It is metabolized primarily in the liver and excreted in the urine.
Benefits:
-
Rapid onset: Provides quick correction of hypotensive episodes during surgeries or acute settings.
-
Targeted action: Selective α₁-adrenergic stimulation leads to effective vasoconstriction with minimal cardiac stimulation.
-
Versatility: Can be used both as a standalone vasopressor and as an adjunct to local anesthetics to enhance their efficacy.
PACKAGING & DOSAGE
One pack contains 10 vials. Each vial contains 1 ml of solution with phenylephrine hydrochloride at a concentration of 10 mg/ml.
Active ingredient: Phenylephrine hydrochloride 10 mg per ml.
Excipients: Sodium chloride, citric acid, sodium citrate, water for injection.
Hypotension management: Administer intravenously in doses ranging from 40 to 100 micrograms, repeated as necessary based on the patient's response. Continuous infusion may be employed, starting at 0.1 to 0.18 mg per minute, adjusting according to blood pressure readings.
Adjunct to local anesthesia: Doses vary depending on the type and site of anesthesia. Typically, 2 to 5 mg is added to the local anesthetic solution to achieve the desired vasoconstrictive effect.
SIDE EFFECTS AND PRECAUTIONS
- Cardiovascular: Reflex bradycardia, hypertension, arrhythmias.
- Central nervous System: Headache, dizziness, anxiety.
- Local reactions: Extravasation at the injection site can lead to tissue necrosis.
Patients with severe hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or known hypersensitivity to phenylephrine should avoid its use.
STORAGE
