AUGMENTIN is na antibiotic combining amoxicillin (a penicillin-class antibiotic) and clavulanic acid (a β-lactamase inhibitor). It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by bacteria resistant to amoxicillin alone.

DESCRIPTION
Augmentin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against many common bacterial pathogens encountered in both general practice and hospital settings. The addition of clavulanic acid extends the activity of amoxicillin to include bacteria that produce β-lactamase enzymes, which would otherwise render amoxicillin ineffective. Augmentin is available in several forms, including tablets, oral suspensions, and intravenous preparations, and is prescribed for both adults and children.
Augmentin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell death.
Clavulanic acid inhibits β-lactamase enzymes produced by some bacteria, protecting amoxicillin from degradation and broadening its spectrum of activity
Effective against β-lactamase–producing strains of haemophilus influenzae, moraxella catarrhalis, staphylococcus aureus, escherichia coli and klebsiella species.
