DESCRIPTION
Alphagan is an eye drop used to lower elevated intraocular pressure in patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. It contains the active ingredient brimonidine tartrate, which is a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist.
Brimonidine lowers intraocular pressure by decreasing aqueous humor production (fluid within the eye) and increasing uveoscleral outflow (alternate drainage pathway). These dual mechanisms help prevent optic nerve damage and vision loss associated with high eye pressure.
Benefits:
- Effective intraocular pressure reduction for glaucoma management.
- Dual-action mechanism distinguishes it from beta-blockers or prostaglandin analogs.
- Comparable efficacy to timolol (a beta-blocker) at peak effect, with sustained pressure control over long-term use.
- Approved as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy, allowing integration with other IOP-lowering agents (e.g., beta-blockers, prostaglandin analogs)
- Lower systemic side effect profile than non-selective alpha agonists, with reduced cardiovascular or pulmonary risks
- It is suitable for chronic use. It maintain efficacy over years, with studies showing stable IOP control even after four years of treatment.
