DESCRIPTION
Agoprex (Agomelatine) is an atypical antidepressant used to treat major depressive disorder. It functions by acting as a melatonin receptor agonist (MT1 and MT2) and a serotonin 5-HT2C receptor antagonist. This dual action helps regulate mood by increasing norepinephrine and dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and normalizes disrupted sleep-wake cycles.
Agoprex (Agomelatine) is a melatonergic agonist at MT1 and MT2 receptors, resynchronizing circadian rhythms and improving sleep. It selectively blocks serotonin 5-HT2C receptors, which leads to increased release of norepinephrine and dopamine in the frontal cortex without affecting serotonin reuptake or other neurotransmitter systems. This unique combination potentiates antidepressant and anxiolytic effects without some side effects typical of other antidepressants.
Alleviates depressive symptoms such as sadness and anxiety.
Improves sleep quality by normalizing circadian rhythms.
May enhance neurogenesis and neuroprotection.
Fewer sexual side effects and weight gain compared to some antidepressants.
Can be effective in patients non-responsive or intolerant to SSRIs.
The usual dosage is 25 mg once daily, preferably taken at bedtime. Depending on individual response, it may increase to 50 mg per day. Tablets can be taken with or without food but should be taken at consistent times.
