DESCRIPTION
Iodine is a vital microelement with high physiological activity, which is an obligatory structural component of hormones produced by the thyroid gland. It also accumulates in the salivary and lactating mammary glands, in the stomach tissue. Iodine is involved in the regulation of the rate of biochemical reactions, affects the energy exchange and maintenance of optimal body temperature, regulates water-electrolyte, protein, fat metabolism, is necessary for growth and development of an organism, maintains the nervous system and is responsible for the neuropsychological state. Iodine takes a direct part in the process of lipid metabolism and enhances the processes of burning subcutaneous fat. Deficiency of iodine entails consequences that seriously affect human health.
Iodine is excreted from the body by the kidneys, partly by the glands - bronchial, salivary and mucous. The body does not produce iodine on its own. Potassium iodide is also used to treat inflammatory diseases of the respiratory tract, bronchial asthma; ophthalmic diseases - cataracts, corneal and vitreous opacities, fungal lesions of the conjunctiva and cornea, hemorrhage in the eye membranes. Potassium iodide is also used as an antifungal drug; when applied locally, it acts as an antiseptic. It is used for diabetes, for diseases of salivary glands and xerostomia.
