Description

CORVALOL (Kopbanon, Corvalolum, Korvalol) is a sedative and spasmolytic medication of plant origin. It contains phenobarbital which produces sedative and mild tranquilizer effect. Phenobarbital also has sedative and spasmolytic effect. It's also classified as a vasodilator and often prescribed for heart conditions.

DESCRIPTION
Corvalol is a combined medication containing phenobarbital, ethylbromisovaleriat and peppermint. This medication reduces central neural system excitement and is prescribed as a natural sleep aid. Peppermint essential oil has a reflexory vasodilatory and spasmolytic activity. Corvalol is a medicine for treating neurosis, tachycardis, insomnia, hypertension, intestinal colic, etc.

PACKAGING & DOSAGE
Corvalol comes in tablets.

Active ingredient: peppermint oil - 580 μg, phenobarbital 7.5 mg, ethyl ester of α-bromisovaleric acid 8.2 mg.
Excipients: beta-cyclodextrin 55.55 mg, potato starch 13 mg, lactose monohydrate 43.77 mg, microcrystalline cellulose 10.5 mg, magnesium stearate 0.9 mg.

Dosage and the course of treatment are defined individually.
The recommended dose, taken orally, before meals 1-2 pills 2-3 times a day.

One of my staple CNS depressants now!

I was surprised at how much I like this med. I have a neurochemical makeup that seems to respond much better to barbiturates and barbiturate-like drugs than other GABAergics such as benzodiazepines (which typically have a ton of icky side effects for me), and the low dose of phenobarbital included in one or two of these tablets is perfect--takes the edge off, effectively calms or eliminates anxiety yet without being too impairing when taken as a sedative in the daytime (it combines/"synergizes" fantastically with my prescribed stimulants too, I've found), and is an excellent hypnotic that puts me gently into a long, deep sleep when taken at bedtime. The formulation, combination of ingredients in Corvalol is perfect IMO--ethylbromoisovalerate is an effective sedative and potentiator of GABAergics in itself, much better than the valerian from which it's derived, and while I'm not sure about the touted medicinal benefits of peppermint oil, one thing I can say for certain is that it makes this taste delicious! (Phenobarbital by itself would taste bitter, in contrast). A hidden gem to the Western world. Totally eliminates the "rebound" effects (anxiety, insomnia) that one can experience after taking short-acting and hard-hitting GABAergic sedatives, and would probably be very useful indeed for weaning oneself off of such drugs after short-to-medium term treatment courses (which, even when limited in dosage and duration, cause more severe rebound and quicker dependence onset than even most contemporary doctors seem to fully acknowledge). I greatly prefer the tablets sold here to any of the liquid formulations for the sake of convenience/ease of use and precision in dosing. Oftentimes, even just a fraction of a single tablet is enough during the day. One side effect I have noticed, especially with frequent or chronic use over an extended period of time, is moderate constipation, likely from the phenobarbital itself as well as the effects of the other constituents (peppermint oil might help reduce flatulence, but that's a double-edged sword) on the digestive tract. But nothing too severe or unmanageable--at worst, a stool softener laxative like docusate sodium clears it right up. Beware however of drug interactions--phenobarbital is not only a powerful depressant but a powerful inducer of P450 liver enzymes pretty much across the board--and it goes without saying (or should) that given that it contains a barbiturate (albeit the least-abusable one in the lowest dosage) this should be used judiciously and responsibly. The warning to take cautiously goes doubly for Corvalol in particular, as not only will phenobarbital accumulate in the body over time due to its extremely long half-life, one could run the risk of bromine poisoning as well if excessively abused. Use carefully, and hopefully this classic medicine will be available for years to come.
